What is a DMX universe?
A DMX universe is one run of 512 control channels sent down a single data path. Every fixture on that run reads its values from a slice of those 512 channels, starting at the address you set on the fixture. When the 512 channels are used up, you need a second universe.

What is a DMX universe, exactly?
A DMX universe is a set of 512 numbered channels sent repeatedly down one data path. Each channel holds one value between 0 and 255, and a fixture reads a consecutive block of those channels starting at its own DMX address. Set a fixture to address 33 in an 8-channel mode and it listens to channels 33 through 40 and ignores the other 504.
Physically, a universe is usually one daisy-chained run of DMX cable out of one output on your interface, through fixture after fixture, terminated at the end. Over a network, Art-Net and sACN carry the same 512 channels as numbered universes inside ordinary Ethernet traffic, and a node at the far end converts a chosen universe back into a physical XLR output.
Two fixtures may share an address deliberately — patch two identical PARs to address 1 and they will do exactly the same thing forever, which is sometimes what you want. Two fixtures sharing an address by accident is one of the most common reasons a rig behaves strangely.
How many fixtures fit in one DMX universe?
As many as fit in 512 channels once you add up each fixture's DMX mode. There is no fixture count — there is only a channel count. A rig of simple LED PARs might fit a hundred fixtures in one universe, while a rig of feature-heavy moving heads can run out at around thirty. Here is a realistic small rig, added up.

That rig sits comfortably inside one universe, with room for roughly twenty-five more moving heads before it runs out. Two rules govern the arithmetic. First, a fixture cannot straddle the boundary: a 16-channel fixture cannot start at address 500, because channels 512 and 513 do not exist on the same run. Second, blocks must not overlap unless you intend them to.
When do you need a second DMX universe?
You need a second universe when the total channel count of your rig exceeds 512, or when the rig is physically split in a way that one cable run cannot serve. Those are two different reasons, and the second one catches people who are nowhere near 512 channels.
- You have run out of channels. Add up every fixture in its patched mode. If the total is over 512, you need a second universe. Switching some fixtures to a smaller DMX mode is the other way out, and often the cheaper one.
- The rig is in two places. A universe is a data path. If half your fixtures are on a truss and half are on the floor at the other end of the room, two runs are easier to cable, easier to fault-find and less fragile than one long chain.
- You have too many devices on one line. DMX512 specifies a maximum of 32 unit loads on a single data line. Past that you need a splitter, and once you are buying a splitter it is worth asking whether a second universe would serve you better.
- You want the rigs isolated. Keeping a house wash on its own universe means a mistake while patching a new moving head cannot accidentally overlap the wash and take the room dark.
How does HitLight handle multiple universes?
HitLight patches fixtures across multiple universes, and it never charges per universe. Each fixture carries a universe and a start address, the 3D stage shows all of them together as one rig, and scenes, cue lists and the timeline address fixtures by name rather than by universe — so a fixture that moves to universe 2 does not break the show you already built.
There is no paid upgrade to unlock a universe and no dongle to buy from us. The limit on how many universes you can run is whatever your output hardware can carry, which is a question about the interface rather than about the software.
What does this mean for the hardware you buy?
A USB DMX interface typically gives you one universe per interface, and a network node scales more easily. That is the practical difference between the two routes, and it matters more than price once a rig starts growing.
- USB adapters are one universe each. An ENTTEC Open DMX USB or DMX USB Pro drives a single universe out of one port. A second universe means a second adapter and a second USB port.
- Network nodes carry many universes down one cable. Art-Net and sACN send numbered universes over ordinary Ethernet, and the node breaks out the universes you assign it to physical XLR ports. Growing the rig usually means adding a node, not re-cabling the laptop.
- Nodes also give you a connector that stays in. Experienced operators tend to prefer a network node for exactly this reason: a USB plug can be kicked out of a laptop.
